OFF LIMITS

Censorship of contemporary art practices

The project, hosted by Tabačka Kulturfabrik, Košice (SVK), is intended to be a collaborative examination of current forms of censorship and political regulations in contemporary arts and culture. Invited professionals will be doing research on the topic of censorship via numerous activities. Curators, artists, cultural workers and managers from V4 countries and Ukraine will be preparing art exhibitions, forums / discussions (each focused on particular region), one collective publication, public screenings, blogs and various public presentations throughout the year 2016. We haven't completely overcome censorship in any Central/Eastern European country. To identify its position in cultural practices of today, it's important to share our experiences and understand its specific forms.

There is no historical period, country or regime, that would abstain from any kind of censorship. Whether it comes directly from the state authority, clerical or spiritual authorities, public audience (when the work questions the society’s taboos) or the authors themselves (in the form of auto-censorship). We usually consider it as a pathological feature referring to a deeper issue in society, inadequate violation of freedom of speech and a subversive attack on civil liberty. From its vulgar forms administrated in the realm of totalitarian regimes to “soft” versions of the so-called “new censorship” (enhancing its practices from elimination to being an autonomous part of the creation process), it generally stands for a negative phenomenon. Does censorship (in any form) implicitly kill freedom in art? Under which circumstances do we experience it today as artists and cultural workers?

MISSION

The project mission is to research on the forms of censorship persisting (or arousing) in contemporary culture and politics in different, yet close political backgrounds of V4 countries and Ukraine. The aim is to arouse public debate about the state of democracy and freedom of speech in Central / Eastern European region and initiate dialogue among artists, activists and wider audience.

Public discourse related to censorship in art is considered to be a reflection on political climate and position of civic society in any given country. V4 together with other Central/Eastern European countries share common ground of significant extent, especially when considering cultural and political development after the year 89'. While looking into this problem that is deep-rooted in historical and political background, close cooperation with our neighbors is inevitable.
